The Stroh violin from the Bihor area
The Stroh violinor „hidèdè with tolcer” (in the Criș Rivers area) is a musical instrument specific to Bihor folklore area. It can also be found, thanks to its expansion in the last half century, also on the territory of the neighbouring counties: Cluj (the Upper Crișul Repede Valley), Alba (the western slope of the Apuseni Mountains) and Arad (The Crișul Alb Plain). It is made of wood and metal, on the simplified skeleton and approximate dimensions of the classical violin. The “sound box” of the horn violin consists of several metal elements of various compositions, together with the metal funnel (Stroh). The physical system for producing sounds on the Stroh violin is based on the operating principle of the gramophone.
