Special singing : the horit, hori’s and hori singers from Transylvania Plain
Horit, an ancient practice of artistic expression in the Romanian space, is represented by an archaic lyrical vocal species and is spread in several localities in the Transylvanian Plain. The chants could have their origins in ritual incantations from the pre-Christian period, having the purpose of purification.
Not being characterized by rhythm, and in this way designed to be sung without accompaniment, any horit may have very long lyrics. Considered evidence of peasant wisdom and philosophy, they reproduce through the text various feelings, of sadness, mourning or pain and, very rarely, of joy.
