The traditional taraf – the instrumental trio
The traditional taraf, conventionally called instrumental trio, is found in all folk areas of the country, both in rural and urban areas and, above all, where there are also dance groups. In today’s sense, the taraf is an instrumental group, made up of at least three musicians who play three different instruments, as follows: one plays the violin – the melody (first violin, primaş), another the counter melody – harmonic chords and the third the contrabass ( drum) – rhythmic-harmonic support. There may be more instrumentalists, but the number of instruments remains the same
