Transhumance is the seasonal movement of people and herds of sheep or cattle, usually between valley areas (with a milder climate for the winter period) and mountains with grassy meadows (for the summer season). The tradition of transhumance, thousands of years old, is an important shepherding practice.

Shepherds’ love / Shepherding in Şușag, Alba county, 2020 Photo:Vasile Sârb (Alba-Iulia) – From the F-DE archive Transhumance în Alba / Located on the Sebeșului Valley, between the Șureanu Mountains and the Cindrel Mountains, Șușag is considered an old settlement of shepherds, their existence being marked, like their ancestors, by two essential moments: the ascent of the sheep to the summer alpine grazing at the end of May and their descent in the fall.
